Migrating development environment from 8.8 to 10 from one machine to another

I’m probably overthinking this but this is my development environment only, with test data I want to keep and no operational data. I am certain that v10 will require some database changes due to some new reserved words in AwareIM. In addition to updating to v10, I am moving to a new machine. My thought is to run through the paces on the new machine with a trial version of AwareIM. My plan is:

Install the database - done
Install AwareIM v10 in trial mode
Create the BSV
Import the data from basdbtest from old to new machine
Put the BSV into test mode - at this point I expect errors to modify some columns for the new reserved words

Will this work or will the BSV attempt to initiate the database in basdbtest and declare that tables are already there?
Am I better off updating to v10 in place?

Any relevant experience will be of value to me.

Disclaimer: I have never upgraded to v10, only done some upgrades from v8 to v9.

I think we have always imported the test database after setting the bsv to testing mode. I think you run into trouble otherwise because AwareIM expects the database to be empty the first time.
Probably not. It is pretty convenient to be able to test everything properly and fix all bugs and CSS stuff after all the id and class changes in the themes.

Yes, you might run into some forbidden column or attribute names. I have just renamed them by putting an “x” in the end. Don’t forget to change the name mappings if the attribute is used in a REST API. AwareIM will not (and can not) warn you if they mismatch.

Not sure if IDGEN is important anymore in v10, but previously we have always taken the IDGEN value from the old server and set the same value on the new server to avoid conflicts.

Testing AwareIM v10 in trial mode?

Hope your BSV is small.

The v10 trial mode is severely limited.
I don’t know all the limits but the number of allowed BOs was smaller then the number of BOs in my BSV I tried to test.

I updated from v9 to v10 and have not encountered any issues with reserved keywords so far.
I see no reason to move to another machine if you would like to upgrade to v10. Of course, there may be other reaons why you want to switch to another machine. But personally, I would be hesitant to make two changes at the same time, as that makes it more difficult to find any errors if anthing goes wrong. So I would either first upgrade to v10 on the old machine and then switch over to the new machine if you have that working, or switch to the new machine first but continue working with 8.8 so that the development environment is identical for both and subsequently upgrade to v10 after you established that the new machine is working fine.

Last but not least, I recommend to work with separate databases instead of the default BASDB and BASDBTEST databases. That will give you more flexibility, in particular when you want to use Stored Procedures at some stage.

I’ve asked Support to verify that but did you get a specific error that you had exceeded the number BOs allowed in the trail mode?

The error I got was: “The business space version contains more business objects than what is allowed on your plan”.

This was with the first or second builds of V10.

Wow. As I said, I have asked Support to verify this and perhaps there is a reason but I’d like to be able to use trial version for times when I just want to work in a sandbox. We’ll see.

I’ve got a second upcloud server right now and it would be nice to put version 10 on there to see what I’m up against for conversion.

Version eight to version nine was a disaster with screens and CSS and Kendo changes.

But this is pretty much impossible to do with a limit on the trial.
Unless it’s easy to get a product key for that test server, and then get a new product key for our production server automatically. I think this is supposed to be a feature of version 10.

The reality is that you need licenses for your local development machine and your production machine. You really can’t just roll in a platform update on the server because Kendo and other changes can wreak havoc that takes time to clean up. I have a third license for a test environment with a copy of live data so I can test on large data sets and as a staging environment to ensure my deployments are good. I would like to see AwareIM accommodate the development vs. server situation better because their test/production model doesn’t work for the reasons stated, but I also understand that makes a secondary product item for them. I just pay the man.

Just to clarify - the free tier doesn’t have a time limit. It’s there so new users can get to know the product at their own pace without worrying about the clock running out.

In the past, we offered a time‑limited trial, but we found that many people couldn’t finish their evaluation before it expired. Life gets busy, and we were often processing requests for extensions or re‑downloads, which created some extra admin work.
