Max length for Plain Text

I have a client that wants me to expand a current text attribute to about 15,000. I'm not clear on how this is handled in MySQL. I thought there was an 8K row limit, but then it also seems that large text and blobs are exempt. I'm unclear.
Will AIM create the proper data type or might I have to change it in the database? I understand certain issues regarding the client/server data transfer and may have to increase MAX_ALLOWED_PACKETS, which is already set high for other reasons.
What are my concerns in supporting this request?

I got involved in a BSV someone else had started... so I'm seeing some crazy things w.r.t field lengths, etc.

When doing an export in TOAD EDGE, I noticed some MySQL fields defined as MEDIUMTEXT.
In Aware, this field was PLAIN TEXT 5000.

It appears I'd have been able to make that TEXT field approx 16MB.
Unsure of AIM's limitations.
