Why is MySQL so slow?

3rd, What could be worse than 1 Lomasky on this forum? Yes, you know, 2 of us! I have convinced my daughter (not bragging, but PhD in CS, CTO of a small startup, etc. etc, ok, done bragging), that her company should use Aware for an application, so she is about to purchase it So do expect more questions from her (she is much smarter than me, so her questions, will be much better formed)

4th, Here is the question, She is using MySQL on a rackspace server. Doing the development remotely and when switching to test mode, takes 30+ seconds. Other stuff using MySQL is sub 1 second. Why is this SO slow?

Dunno anything about Rackspace as I use AWS for all of my servers and mine seems to run fine. Different regions are obviously faster than others.

What size instance is she running. How much RAM? I notice a huge difference when kicking up from 2GB to 4GB for development.
Also how much allocated to Tomcat vs AwareIM server vs configurator?

I had her set Aware to 256 for all 3 options re: ram. Not sure what the rackspace server is set to, (will ask tomorrow), but what setting from 2G to 4G are you talking about? for the JVM or ???

oh yea, and didn't mention, she is doing her development on her local box (she is using OSX, I changed my system to point to her DB using Win10 on a fast machine with 16G and it was still dog slow.

Dog Slow = 45 seconds when I press the Q to test.

How about the MySQL configuration? (You can get it on my.ini in MySQL installation directory)

Have you tried deleting all the records in the execution_contexts file?

Hi Bruce,

not sure if the app has lot of icons loaded? If yes then one thing you can try is to clean the BASDBTEST's dv_res table. (PS... Don't do this on the BASDB). In the past the icons would create new records in this table for each icon every time you put the application in test so it builds up a lot of binary data and records in that table.
When mine got super slow to put in test mode I used to just clear that table and everything was fine again. These days I only use font icons so don't have that issue anymore.

Not sure if it will help but it's something you can try. (Make full backup before you do).

So, my daughter is using the demo version. We deleted the main DB and created a new one, imported her app, and VIOLA it is now 2-3 seconds instead of 30-45 seconds.... hummmmm...

Depending on your situation, sometimes a ton of BSVs in test mode can slow down a system also.

Were you using the same versions of MySQL? In our experiments some LATER versions of MySQL were much slower than the previous ones. Not sure if this still applies, though.

Having said that SQL Server (Express included) is by far the fastest of the database engines!

@support. Do you know if there are any problems with aware and the aws aurora mysql compatible server. Or feedback on speed?

Maybe I was doing something wrong but when I briefly tested Aurora about 12 months ago I found a number of my Reference Attributes failed when migrated from MySQL.

Have not gone near it since.

That may be so, but the limitation of Express of 10GB and 1GB ram could shoot you in the foot down the road. Upgrading to MS Sql will be very very expensive

I find that Mysql version 5.6 is faster than 5.7 and it's very noticeable . I also understand as more users access the system 5.7 starts to outperform 5.6. So there is some point where 5.7 starts to be more efficient at higher loads - I have yet to get there and establish the threshold though
