Reports - Plan B -- Use Jasper Community vs. built in Report

OK, Giving up on using Word for reports.

The built in report writer is a subset of Jasper. It seems to me the best solution would be to install the Jasper Server (Free!), use the Jasper Studio (also FREE) to design my reports, then have Aware just call the server using the DISPLAY URL command. Should be as fast as running reports in Aware, Lots more flexibility.

Before I invest TOO much time, has anyone else gone this route? Any good reason not to?

I have been traveling since the conference and will not get a chance to collate all the content until I get back home this coming weekend.
I expect it to take a week or two to put it all together but will announce availability and pricing here once it is ready.

You could do that, sure. But why make your life so difficult? Seven years in, done a bunch of pretty complicated reports, i don't love the aware report builder but it works.

I'd be interested to see a report, so complex or difficult, that you couldn't just use the inbuilt aware report builder.

That's the key. It it works, then 80% of the problem is solved!

The reason I would do it is cause I can knock our reports much faster with Jasper. Much better editing tools, formatting, etc. etc. Its no more effort. I have to once, install and configure the jasper report server, then call the report using a url. Easy to pass parameters, Much easier to have SUB reports where I want to see the layout as I am designing it.

p.s. the other advantage, is that I can access the reports from any other program or directly from the jasper server.
