Exception updating/locking business space version null

I was making several changes to operational stuff and perspectives, no database change and when I try any of the save or publish type options it give me this error.

ERROR: "Exception updating/locking business space version null"

I know I have received this in the past once but I don't remember what I did to correct it. The check integrity shows NO PROBLEMS.

Any suggestions?

Try to export into BSV, shutdown both the server and the Configuration Tool, re-start, import the version and re-save

I can't export, in fact. I can't find anything that would SAVE my changes that doesn't return this error. I just closed and did the changes again.

Not sure it helps find this error, but I noted the following:
#1) I did not have to close the control panel, just the configuration tool

#2) One of the changes I had made prior to getting this "version Null error" was to add a new Access Level and new Visual Perspective.

When I was making these changes the 2nd time and going thru and correcting a few other items I noticed the following:

I went to save a BO FORM and it gave an error (Not the same as above) and the problem was the NEW Access Level that I had added was placed in the "Do not use this form for". I moved it to the "Use this form for" and it saved fine.

I'm not saying this is the problem that caused the above error, just something I noticed. I guess its possible I hit a key or something and moved it but I don't believe so.

Not sure any of this helps but thought I would post it just in case it may.

This just happened again. "Exception updating business space version null".
I've published and exported prior to this message since the last reset and this has nothing to do with the error before other than its the same error message.

Any suggestion at all on what may be causing this??

I can't find any errors on the Integrity Checker the logs or any other screen I've tried to find.

When this happens I can't find any way to SAVE my changes and in this case its about two hours work.

Just as a general precaution - keep saving your work regularly whether you are working in MS Word or Aware IM. Keep exporting your BSV file.

Regarding the problem.
1) When EXACTLY does it happen? When you are trying to publish?
2) What happens when you try to export? If you are getting the error message it cannot be the same error. So what is it?
3) What is the output of the Aware IM Server?
4) What does the system.log (located in the BIN directory) say?

Your clear answers to each of these questions may help us identify the problem.

Answers below:
#1) It appears I receive the SAME error message anytime I try one of the following UPDATE & KEEP LOCKED, UPDATE & UNLOCK, PUBLISH, EXPORT, TEST. I guess anything that tries to WRITE it back out?

#2) It is the same error message that appears when trying any of the options in 1 above. It is the same error message as if I attempt the Update & Keep Locked function. No difference in wording of the message.

#3) I see nothing out of line in the Aware log. I've already aborted the configuration tool and started other things. Next time I'll check and advise if anything is in this log, but I did look just about everywhere I could think of when it was happening and did not see anything that gave me a clue or may have been out of line.

#4) I haven't downed the Control Panel so I have everything in the System.Log for the last 9 1/2 hours and NOTHING is out of line. In fact the only thing in the log is the repeating "Unable to connect to remote host..." message that is normal if you don't have email defined.

What is this error and do you know what may be causing it. Or would you recommend I pay special attention to xyz, etc.

I have been "Updating & Keep Locked" as I'm make the changes for the 2nd time and so far nothing has caused it.

I'll keep you posted next time it happens and please advise if you need my to watch for anything?

Thanks for the detailed answers.

Regarding EXPORT. It simply cannot be the same error message with exactly the same words! There is no path in the code from the export functionality to this error message. Are you sure this is exacly the same message worded "Exception updating business space version ..."?

More questions:
1) Can you check output of the Configuration Tool if there is anything suspicious there
2) Is the version saved on the server despite the exception?

#1) I do have error information recorded in the config tool and I have send it via email to support@awareim.com because of its size.

#2) As for the save to the server, I guess the answer would be NO. There is NO FILE by the name I gave it during the attempted EXPORT.

#3) As for your previous question concerning the error message.
I have verified this during the problem, it just appeared again.

If I try and "update & keep locked" the error message is:
ERROR: "Exception updating/locking business space version null"

If I select the export and select the file name to save the error is:
ERROR: "Exception while exporting business space version null"

So the only wording difference is the "updating/locking" ver "exporting"

*** ADDITIONAL INFORMATION THAT MAY HELP **
I can recreate this error EVERY TIME if I do the following:
#1) Go into ANY QUERY
#2) Go to the OPERATIONS and select or add one
#3) Go to the EDIT icon button (Make sure you select one that is already set to the DEFAULT IMAGE
#4) Select the BROWSE button, select an image and click OK
Controlled truncation of a data string) Select the SAVE to save the change to this Query
summary field in presentation title returns null) Right Click on the Business Object Version and select UPDATE & KEEP LOCKED

THE ERROR IS DISPLAYED EVERY TIME, regardless of which Query and regardless of which image

Please note if you type the file spec in place of #4 above, it will give you a different error. This time its "Exception while saving the object null"

HOPE THIS HELPS its DRIVING ME CRAZY!!!! ps: Need a bug tester. I seem to be finding them. :lol:

I know this is an old thread, but I am getting this error now:
Exception updating/locking business space version null

I created a new access level and saved it and updated the server OK.

Created a new visual perspective, gave it a name, clicked 'The system will use this perspective when a user logs in', pressed 'Access Levels...', moved the new access level to the right and saved it.

When trying to update and keep locked, I get the above error.

Doing 'Check Integrity' shows 'No integrity problems'

I do not see anything in the Aware logs, and I am not sure where to look for the JBoss and Tomcat logs, so I do not know if anything is in those.

There is nothing in the output window of the server nor the configuration tool.

I can not export the version, I get the following error:
Exception while exporting business space version null.

There must be something wrong with my business space. If I create a new business space, I can create new access levels and visual perspectives with no problem.

I have received this error a number of times.

I have found that it occurs either when there are a lot of unwritten changes and especially when there are a lot of Business Space versions that are obsolete.

What I have found is that if I delete all but 1 obsolete version (Delete one at a time and try update after each successful delete) it usually fixes it, else I have to restart configuration tool and redo the changes.

It is best practice at this point to save and update changes regullarly

I know this does not solve your short term issue with this bsv, but I very regularly export BSVs as I am working on them throughout the day. That provides a backup copy as of a point in time. In fact, I use the date and time in my naming of exported BSVs for easy reference later .. for example:

The new Visual Perspecitve was the only change I was trying to save, so the problem is not a lot of unwritten changes. I do have almost 20 obsolete versions. I will try deleting these (after exporting, just in case) and see if that fixes the problem.

As it turns out, I did not need the new access level and visual perspective I was trying to create. So I have continued making progress with my application with out them. But I still need to resolve this because I will need to add new access levels and visual perspectives in the future.
