I was getting the error in Test mode. I was presented with the normal login screen and, after entering BS and login information, the error was appearing.
I got help from Aware Support and found that a web.xml file in the tomcat/web_apps/awareim/web-inf folder had gone missing.
I hadn't been in that folder, so suspect that it is a Tomcat issue - the server had crashed with a memory leak problem and I suspect that it happened then...
Scary stuff!
The proper procedure is to install Aware in another folder and copy the XML file across. Although it might be worth reinstalling Aware on top of the existing install, because if one file has gone missing it's very possible that others have as well.
I took a chance and copied the xml file from my laptop and it all worked fine. Then I remembered that I had a backup and so restored that file. Still working fine.
