Word merge "executing" message will not go away

Has anyone else experienced AwareIM "hanging" when doing a Word merge? By hanging, I mean that "executing" shows on the screen & the only way to clear it is to close AwareIM server & start it again.

It does not happen all the time, but enough that it's getting irritating for users.

Has anyone else seen this happen?

Hi Tom,
I have experienced this issue to and i am currently investigating this problem myself. For me the issue is the same as yours, Aware IM hangs at "Executing" and i have to restart the server to fix it. I think the cause is when trying to use document templates or functions related to Word on a server that has Office 2010 installed (have not tested this extensively though).

This is what i have noticed do far. First of all, i think this issue is related to Office 2010 and that there is something with the 2010 version that causes this issue. When this issue occur, "WINWORD.EXE" is taking almost 100% CPU on my VPS and it does not go away. I have even tried letting the "Executing" go on for quite a while but the issue does not resolve it self and "WINWORD.EXE" is constantly at the high CPU %.
Another thing. This issue only occur when i run Aware IM as a Windows service. When i deactivate the Aware IM as a service setup and run Aware IM with the standard configuration tool startup, i do not experience the same issue.

Here is how you can reproduce the error i´ve had (directed at support), at least this is an issue on my server and i think it is the same error as the one posted here by Tom. I noticed the error when trying to use the "Library" sample application and to reproduce try Aware IM on a WS2008 server (might be the same on pc) with Office 2010 installed and where Aware IM is run as a Windows service. Install and try to open up the "Library" sample application. When i try to do this, the first time i open up the application Aware IM tries to populate the application with sample data and here this issue occur. Aware IM hang ("Executing") and the data is not being installed and the above mentioned things happen with CPU etc.

Support, can you take a look at this or is there someone else who knows this issue/a solution for this?

The post you refer to is mine and I never did get this working properly. I rely on merged word docs a lot and have had to stay down on Office 2007. I also don't run AwareIM as a service because all I get is a spinning ball, as Tom is getting now.

If my memory is correct, Microsoft diswallowed the use of Standard Office products On servers starting at Office 2010. You had to get a special version only available to purchasers of volume license keys which made the solution very expensive.

I really fear for the future of Office as the engine that AwareIM relies on for document merging ( see my latest post "The Future of Microsoft Office")

We have the same problem, currently we have to ensure the server logs on automatically and starts the control panel in a startup.

Maybe the solution is to move to a Linux type solution for creating documents in open xml and spreedsheets. I think Aware already creates spreedsheets on linux.

Hi Tom

Yes, running using the control Panel has worked for us so far although not ideal as it requires an active session.

But you need to ensure that the registry is updated with a User/Password http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310584 so that on restart it logs in.

We then just put a shortcut to the control panel in the startup directory. This ensure that its always running, unless of course someone connects and logs the session off.

We have always started AwareIM Control Panel ourselves & left the session open, so that isn't part of the issue in our case.

Did you find that a transition to Word 2010 caused this issue? Or other issues / concerns?

Hi Tom,

All attempts to run Office 2010 - either with AwareIM running as a service or from the control panel in an active session resulted in the scenario you now have - a spinning ball with the process never finishing.

In the end I removed office 2010 and re-installed my Office 2007. With 2007, I still can't get AwareIM to run as a service - but it's a different error -

"Error accessing MSWord document Dispatch not hooked to windows memory"

I think Support suggested uninstalling AwareIM, then installing O 2010 and then re-installing AwareIM from scratch. The inference being that O 2010 had to be up and running on the server before AwareIM was installed.

To be honest, I think abject cowardice set in at this point and I decided to stick with what I knew worked.

I have Office 2010 installed on my VPS and my problem/issue does not occur when i run Aware IM through the configuration tool startup mode (i.e. when i do not Run Aware IM as a service). I have not tested this problem/issue thoroughly though as i have not yet created an application with word merging features etc. I have as i mentioned in my previous post come across this issue when trying out one of the sample applications.

Nevertheless, the i hope support can solve this issue in some way so the work merging features work as they should. Also, i do not want to runt Aware IM through the configuration tool mode.

Support or someone who has a working setup i.e. a setup where all word features work as they should (when running Aware IM on a Windows server and as a Windows service ideally). Could you provide the exact Office version you have so we who experience this issue have the option of trying to set up the same setup until support (hopefully) solves this issue?

I switched back to Office 2007 on the server about a week ago & have not had the issue reported again since then. We do not run AwareIM as a service.

Ok, thanks Tom. I will look into trying this and possible also other versions. I am trying to find a working solution that works and that works when Aware IM is running as a service. I will keep you informed of my findings. I will possible also look into other options like RTF format, XML format.

Which type of MS Office 2007 are you running? Home and Student, Proffesional or Ultimate? I belive this may make a difference as to the problems discussed here.

Do you have a word document that utilises the SUBDOCUMENT tag? Would you be able to try an run a document that does? Im wondering if it will throw the dispatch not hooked to windows memory error. I know that my setup ie o2007, windows server with 1and1 etc are all very similar setup to you.
