Using a smartphone camera as a barcode scanner

is it possible to use the camera built into a mobile phone as a barcode scanner,

basically needing to use the phone or tablet as a sales tool, so our sales staff can scan in the barcode of a product so they can add to an order.

any suggestions will be welcomed.

the barcode scanning needs to link up to an order entry in awareim, so when you create a new order and you go to add a line item, instead of punching in a code or description you scan the barcode for the full code to populate in the line item lookup.

I have googled for this many times and the only thing I've found is a piece of (expensive) hardware that hooks into the iPhone charge socket (Apple use them in their stores so you might be able to get some better info if you chat to one of their guys)

Most of the apps focus on barcode product/pricerecognition or QR codes and then diverting the output to a website to check prices or decode the details in the 3d bar. What you (we) need is a core app that will activate the camera/scanning software whenever we tap into an editable text field .... Doesn't exist I'm afraid - or at least I've not found one.

Would be a great (paid for?) bolt on to AwareIM though support 🙂 (or anyone out there developing iOS apps)

It would be awesome, to have something like that, I wonder how many others would want to pay for something like that to be developed, perhaps we could all share the costs, I know that I definately will not mind.

But it will need to work with all mobile devices, but iOS devices as preference.

results are stored in barcode_results.sql
Aware IM connects to that database and talks to your BO

I have played around with this and can offer a fairly decent, free Android solution.

Download above free android app, then download free pc client. When the pc is running the client in the background and the smartphone is connected to the computer via bluetooth, anything scanned by the phone is automatically fed to the application (or web page form field in focus).

Now, just configure your app to configure your app to process the input as soon as it receives it and you can scan barcodes all day long into your AwareIM app without going anywhere near the pc.

We use Icody scanner app for IOS and it works natively, by opening the mobile business perspective inside its built in browser from where you can scan into any field you need to.

I have posted a couple of posts about this IDE (Mobione) before. I use it myself to create IOS and Android apps and it is WYSIWYG so fairly simple and straightforward (more advanced options are also available).
