Yes, simply replacing the JDBC with an up-to-date version seems to have resolved it.

Do you think this seems to be the fix for this problem? Will you include the mysql-connector-java in future releases or will we still need to make the above modifications manually?

Sorry Guys, Being in the fireworks business, I've had a busy November and run up to New Years Eve. Only just getting back in the saddle now the weather has turned wet and windy.

Will test out all the above suggestions over the next few days and report back - unless Support tell us this is going to go away in 5.8 - in which case I won't bother
