plain text appears different display formt in form

I have a BO with a plain text attribute, say 'users', which has choice determined by a custom query. When the BO is created or edited, the 'users' attribute is displyed as a drop down list in the form. But when I query this BO with the same form, the 'users' attribute displayed as a text box. How can display the 'users' attribute as a drop down list in a form for query just like it is displayed in the create/edit form?
