Dynamic Cloud Server and Windows Web Server 2008

Hi all,

Do you have experience working with AwareIM installed on a Windows Web Server 2008 in a Cloud Server?. Any advantage or disadvantages between 2003 and 2008 Windows Server with MySQL?.

Should be no problems for the Cloud Server

We use both and have for some months now.

The only hitch is when multi logins via Terminal Services (RDP)

If you login and cannot see your Aware cntrl panel you will have to goto
Terminal Services manager and connect to the last connected profile

Also, updating MSFT updates sometimes cause the need to re-install

I have installed both AwareIM and MySQL on a new Windows 2008 Dynamic Cloud Server, but when I try to start AwareIM Control Panel, JBoss try to start but nothing happens till a Error starting Aware IM appear and that´s all. Tomcat and AwareIM Server don´t start. Could you help me on this installation.

I have in the back of my mind to try out Amazon EC2 running AwareIM and use the Amazon Relation Data Service which looks like it's based off MYSQL. Who knows if or when I'll get around to it.

Is there any reason Amazon RDS would not work with AwareIm?

Hi, We have deployed in these DC's and under these OS's

Also in VPS/XEN/VMWare/Hyper-V
Windows 2000 -> 2008 R2 with MySQL and Derby
Using CentOS / RedHat

Rarely we have any issues unless we are spanning between layers
Web/Application/DB and this is always Firewall or IP access.

Overall - If you do install and it does not start there is something inherently wrong with the deployed OS or storage.

I am getting the exact same problem and cant find a way round it - even support dosent know!

iRufino - did you solve this problem? what was the cause?

If anyone has any clue as to why this might be happening then please let me know...im completely stuck.

I have a client that is running AwareIM on an Amazon EC2 cloud server. I have root access to the instance and it operates in the same manner as my windows 2003 server. They currently have the small instance and I suspect that it wouldn't take much to push them to need the large instance (7.5gb of ram compared to 1.9 gb) but it looks like a good option. I am considering switching over as even the large instance is half the price of my current server.

With respect to your startup problem, there have been problems in the past with Jboss starting, see

I have searched this forum for answers and had previously tried your sugestion in the post you mention above. I have just tried it again to be sure but still the same problem.

I have also tried deleting the content of ...Tomcat/work/Catalina/localhost as sugested in another post - still the same problem.

I have tried reinstalling AwareIM with both MySQL and Derby setups but still the same problem!

I think jboss actually starts but it dosent say so in the Aware Control Panel - there i get a message 'Process Finished' next to JBoss. Tomcat and Aware IM Server dont even try to start i dont think.

Just a thought but have you tried running JBoss and Tomcat as windows services manually and then just running the console to start up AwareIM? If this works for you, don't forget to allocate memory to the two services in the relevant props files.

Seems like a good suggestion but i havn't a clue how to go about doing that! Servers are a reasonably new thing to me, the only reason i have one is to run AwareIM altough now im getting into it ive managed to work out how to host my own website etc (wow) so i am no longer paying someone else for the pleasure, my knowlege is basic but growing!!

I suppose i shall do some more reading...googling...etc and see if i can work it out.

Ive never had these problems in the past and have sucessfully set up aware im on various machines and windows server 2003. The idea for me now is to get the trail version of awareim working on Windows 2008 and then transfer my BSV and operational data from my current VPS to the new cloud server, easy i thought!!

It's pretty easy. Just go into the AwareIM/bin folder and run InstallService.bat. This will install the windows services. Then start up the Windows Services window and set AwareIM to manual and start up jboss and tomcat but leave AwareIM stopped. The run the console and it should show that jboss and tomcat are already started and commence to starting awareim.

I followed your last post and installed as services. Made sure that JBoss and Tomcat had started in windows services and AwareIM was not started. I then started Aware Control Panel and after about five mins got the following message

'The software port 1098 required for JBoss server to start is used by another application. Plese see user guide.'

So i changed the file 'AwareIM/JBoss/server/bas/conf/jbossservice.
xml' as per user guide to specify a different port (9150 i specified)

Restarted Server. Made sure JBoss and Tomcat had started as services then started the Aware Control Panel. Again i get the similar message:
'The software port 9150 required for JBoss server to start is used by another application. Plese see user guide.'

I suppose my question now is how do i find an available port for JBoss to use?

That seems strange, I have never had a problem splitting up the jboss and tomcat service from the awareim service. Have you tried just running awareim as a service as well? Let's see if this is really a port issue or not.

AwareIM starts fine when started as a service.

I can go to http://localhost:8080/AwareIM/logonOp.aw and see the login page. However when i try to log in i get this message:

'Unable to open TCP/IP socket for server localhost on port 9000. Please make sure port 9000 is unblocked. Original exception is connection refused: connect'

I have made sure the port is unblocked in windows fire wall and also tried with firewall off altogether. I guessing this is a seperate problem anyway.

Back to the point tho, if aware im starts as a service why dosent the control panel work? How do i access the configuration tool without a control panel? do i even need a control panel?

Hi,
I'm pretty swamped today so hopefully someone else can step in to give you a hand with why the service runs but the console version doesn't. It may be that the console bat file checks for open ports whereas the service startup doesn't. You don't need to use the console, the advantage though is that the console offers better access to the log viewers. You can run the config tool independently of the console, just run C:\AwareIM\bin\ClientStarter.bat.

With respect to Port 9000, do I understand that you are deployed on Amazon EC2? If so, log into the EC2 Console and click on Networking & Security/Security Groups. Click on ‘main’ and then you can see the open ports at the bottom of the screen. You can easily add the ports that you need if they are not showing as open. By default EC2 locks down all ports.

Are you using MySQL? had a problem a while ago where jboss/tomcat/aware tried to start before MySQL was ready.

Services reported MySQL was ready but actually it was in crash recovery mode and not accepting connections.

Try starting the services manually once you are sure your databse is fully operational.

Start with jboss, wait about a minute -then tomcat - pause - then Aware
