Problems with remote stand alone linux client

I have the Aware IM server running on a remote windows machines (hosted), for which I can use the local windows aware im client fine. I have the full install on a separate linux box (doesn't seem to be a client only install). I have a VPN connection from my linux box to the remote server, which I can ping, etc.... I have made the modifications to the linux client's props and server's server props files as the install guide suggests.
When I try to attach to the remote server from my linux client the mouse just sits there 'spinning' forever. I can type in the incorrect password and it lets me know, and if I turn off the server, it also lets me know it can't connect. This leads me to think it's finding the connection, and passing the username / password test, but then just sits there ???
BTW I am pretty sure I have had this working in the past, but a while ago.
Any ideas would be useful.

Have you changed the BASServer.props on the SERVER to change all references of localhost to the LAN name of your server?

Yes I have. Both the relevant client and server props files have been amended as per the installation guide. Thanks.

Take a look at what is in the output of the Configuration Tool - there may be some clues there.

Also have you checked the section about the etc/host files?

I run the configuration tool from a console window, and there is a lot of info that comes up, but nothing that makes any sense to me.

I have followed all of the instructions, including making sure that the name of the server on both machines (in hosts files) is the exact same as the server machine's windows name.

I have also tried through a VPN, and because I wasn't sure if Ubuntu's VPN was working properly, just over the internet directly, although the documentation says it has to be on a LAN. Is this actually correct ?

I checked the firewall on the server and ports 9000 and 8080 are both open, I noticed a reference to port 9650, so I opened that up as well. Now it doesn't just sit there, but gives me an error: "Error establishing connection with server. ERROR: org.openadapter.adapter.jms.JMSLink - init() failed with JMS Queue ...".

Any further thoughts ?

So you have a firewall blocking ports between the client and the server??

This is a no-go. You shouldn't have a firewall between the Configuration Tool and the server. There's quite a number of ports that need to be open and we do not have a complete list.
