Aware IM and Google Gears

I just thought I would throw this out there and see what people think. Google Gears allows web applications to perform faster and in offline mode by caching data locally.

I figured that since Aware IM is built 100% in Java code that implementing such a feature shouldn't be a problem. Would developers in this community want to see such versatility in their applications?

Its be really a great feature if awareim has, By this application built on awareim are more powerful.

As Google Gears help to store the data while offline which help a application to work in any condition without halting work.

Not sure I understand how it works when the server is present - does it automatically synchronize local data with the server?

No, Google Gears stores cached data in an SQLite database. What stores and how often is set by the developer. Google Gears is still in beta so I wanted to put it on everyone's radar. I have a feeling that it will be the future of rich internet applications because of its ability to utilize local processing and memory resources far beyond the browser itself. Less load on the application/ data servers equates to a better user experience all around.

Thank you for this. We'll keep an eye on this technology. Shouldn't be too hard to integrate it once its officially available.

Google uses it for their calendar, so that a user can still access their info when they are not on-line.

I thought Google gears was more related to Google apps only but apparently not.This is a very exciting

They have even removed the Google from the name so its now "Gears"

However I don't see how an Aware application could use this for offline transactions because AwareIM relies on the rules engine which is server based. So maybe it will be good for static information like product and customer contact look ups, or a calendar view. ... but maybe i am missing something

I don't know all the ins and outs of Gears so the question on processing the application logic on the client side is a good one. I do know that the application logic is stored in the database with Aware IM which means that access such code would be a lot easier.

To answer the question on why this would be beneficial I suppose any time where you want a client's application to still be useful in the event of a network outage is a good reason to use Gears. Such as a salon that would still need to manage appointments or a business that still needs to create invoices. Gears gives the peace of mind to clients that don't have a network admin available at all times.

It is now 2012, Google stopped development of Gears in 2011.

It seems as if people are using HTML5 for offline caching.

How does this effect AwareIM and what possibilities could we look into for offline caching when using AwareIM?
