starting and stopping from command line

I would prefer not to have to stay logged on to the server at all times. Is there an easy way to start and stop the various services (Tomcat, JBOSS, AwareIM server) from the command line?

Not from the command line. You can shutdown and re-start the server from the Control Panel. Otheriwse you can just kill all the running processes starting with "java".

Will the included scripts, such as startAwareIMNoGui.sh, not work to get things started (on Mac OS X)? If they will work, do I have to be in a specific directory when I execute them?

I guess my question stems from my understanding that when I shutdown the Configuration Tool, it shuts down the AwareIM server, as well as JBOSS and Tomcat. If I could start up and shutdown the Configuration Tool without impacting the running system, I'd be a happy guy!

Tom,

shutting down the Configuration Tool does not shut down the Aware IM server, Tomcat or JBoss! They are totally separate. In fact, you can even run the Configuration Tool on a separate machine. If shutting down the Configuration Tool does shut down the Aware IM server and other servers on your machine, it means that something is seriously wrong with your configuration.

OK -- my mistake. It's the AwareIM Control Panel that I'm referring to. I did not want to have it running at all times. That prevents me from logging out. I apologize for mistating my issue.

If I attempt to Quit the Aware IM Control Panel, it wants to shut everything down. Is this normal? I had hoped it was merely controlling daemon processes that ran separately.

Yes, shutting down Control Panel also shuts down all other servers. There is no way at the moment to shut down Tomcat or JBoss separately other than killing the "java" processes (which is not recommended if you are running the Control Panel). I still don't understand, though, why you would need that. You saying it prevents you from logging out - logging out from where?

In order to run the Aware IM Control Panel, I need to be logged on to the server via a GUI interface. Therefore, I can not log out of the GUI interface without shutting down the Aware IM Control Panel and consequently the whole Aware IM application.

I would like to be able to log onto the server as a system administrator, start up Aware IM (JBOSS, Tomcat, etc.) via the Aware IM Control Panel, and then log out of the server without shutting down the whole Aware IM application.

You can try running startAwareIMNoGUI.sh script. You need to open the Terminal window and change to Aware IM BIN directory:

cd /Applications/AwareIM.app/Contents/Resources/java/bin

And then run the script
bash startAwareIMNOGUI.sh

This will start all the servers without you having to use the GUI interface.

That's the type of suggestion I'm looking for. I had tried it previously, but without success. I get the following error:
startAwareIMNoGUI.sh: line 14: ../JDK/bin/java: No such file or directory

We found a similar script in the /Applications/awareim.app/Contents/Resources/Java/VAR/binmac directory and were able to get it to work with a few modifications. However, I hate to use a modified script that's not provided by you folks, as it may stop working as a result of changes on your part to the AwareIM application package.

So...you're on the right track! Glad we're finally on the same page.

This time it's our turn to apologize. You are right - the script we recommended to you is actually for Linux and it turns out that we do not have an official Mac version yet. The changes, though, are fairly straightforward and it looks like you've done them already. Please stick with your version for now until we release the official version for Mac.

By the way, I believe the AwareIM Control Panel application should be written to control daemon processes. It should provide a graceful way to start and stop them. It should not be required to be running in order for Aware IM to be available to users. This is what we find with similar services on a server platform. I do believe the current approach would be seen as a "show stopper" for many individuals.

Just a recommendation for your consideration.

The above discussion was about Mac, not Windows. Why do you want to start Aware IM from Windows command line? Under Windows you can start Aware IM as a service, which is a lot better than starting it from the command line.

Yes. Change to the AwareIM/bin directory and run the startAwareIM.bat script. This will start the ControlPanel. Run startAwareIMNoGUI.bat to start Aware IM that does not display any GUI.

Should be possible if you just know the process names of Aware and is the 3 different java ones I think. Not sure if it messes something else up and if Java/Aware starts up gracefully when restarting but should think so.
