Installation hangs on Mac oS X

Running Mac OS X 10.5.6 on an Intel Mac with mySQL 5.1.30. When I ran the installation for a mySQL backend, it asked for credentials, then asked if I wanted to test the credentials, and....end of story. The installer says it was com.base.install.DatabaseoptionsDlg Nothing else happens. I could quit, at which point it said the installation was successful. But, when I launch Aware, it says access to the database has been denied. Standard socket path, standard port (3306). Any ideas?

It's a bug. We'll have a look and issue a patch. To get around this issue please do the following:

Delete or rename the file BASServer.props located in the BIN directory of your Aware IM installation
Copy the file BASServerJBossMySQL.props to BASServer.props in the same directory (so this file replaces BASServer.props)
Start Aware IM. Most likely Aware IM will not start because of invalid credentials. Press the Settings button on the Aware IM Control Panel, select the Database tab and set your MySQL credentials and other info
Re-start Aware IM

Further to the previous message:

to find the BIN directory on Mac you need to select Aware IM application and click on the Show Package Contents button. Then navigate to Contents/Resources/java/bin directory.

Works fine up to this point, but after it says it doesn't like the credentials, it throws a message: Cannot launch java application
Uncaught exception in main method: java.lang.NullPointerException

I can't click the settings button while this is up, and if I click the Quit button to dismiss it, the whole thing shuts down.

If I'm quick enough, I can click the settings button before that error comes up, and settings will load, then the error freezes everything else and I have no choice but to quit.

I opened BASServer.props in a text editor, and i see the lines referencing user root, but I don't see any way to get a password in there.

You can specify credentials like so in the file:
....?user=blah&password=blah
