After beating myself up over this for 6 hours, testing my applications and trying different work arounds before submitting my query to support - the dam thing is working again?!!
Which leads me to suspect some possible problem with my browser / or laptop.
Is it possible that your session indeed times out?
Checking the pop up calendar was one of the first things I did after logging into the system (30 secs and then was logged out).
Until support can address your question, do the logs provide any clues?
