Keep initially collapsed Separator Expanded after saving form

I have a form that has several Separators on it that are initially collapsed.

A user can then expand a separator and enter some stuff into a text block.

When the form is saved I have it staying on that record, but the separators go back to being collapsed when it is redisplayed.

The client now wants to have any separators that were expanded to stay expanded when the record is saved and then only have them collapsed when they first open the form.

Any thoughts on how something like that might be possible?

This is a workaround I use to achieve something similar:

Remove the labeling from the separator and use a check box with the same label positioned above where the separator is
Then set the separator to hidden and to be exposed (dynamic) if the checkbox is checked.
