Why can't a Pick List have an Operation with Records

I have a pick list, where I want a button to open additional info for the record. If I do that, I get "Cancel Current Operation?".

Is there a way around this?

Unfortunately the process on the record interrupts the process and AIM can't thread processes.

What about expand row functionality instead? Or an html pop up?
