FR - Fix the installer to install updates not fresh installs

Post by PointsWell »

Updates are destructive.

If you "update" AIM the overhead is too great as you have to shut the server down and then:
  1. Restore the BASServer.props
  2. Replace the contents of the Fontawesome folder if you use FA Pro
  3. Update the Aware.css to reflect the FA Pro
  4. Update the Startup.html if you've made any changes
  5. Replace the mySQL jdbc connector with the current version
  6. Refresh all the elements on Renmur's list (if you are bothered)
  7. Replace the Startup.props to put memory settings back
It's a 15 minute job at most, but it is unnecessary effort for an upgrade.

Once I install the update....everything in your list takes about 45 seconds if you update Fontawesome as well and about 4.5 seconds if you dont.
Winautomation does it all very fast.

Total down time for server max about 5 mins including updating Aware
Cheers,
Mark

I have been using a Java based DB Tool that I have been quite impressed with. During my evaluation period it had an upgrade delivered. The update was managed by a tool called install4j.

It seems to be quite capable and has upgraded the install (rather than doing a fresh install) while keeping all of my preferences and settings.

It also seems to handle code signing which seems like is going to become a bigger and bigger issue on Macs.
