When using MySQL, during the setup it asks what the default character set should be. I opted for ISO Latin-1, but should I use UTF-8 since Java is unicode based?

at the moment Aware IM does not support multiple languages, so both ISO Latin-1 and UTF-8 will work fine (MySQL driver responsible for converting Java to MySQL and back will handle the differences).
Later on, when Aware IM has support for multiple languages, the choice of the character set will be important.
