Regular Hosting or Cloud

Post by Maxo42 »

For transfer my application on the web, I currently have a website with web hosting for $4/month. I could install my app through this web hosting using a subdomain.
However, I was wondering what you think would be best. Web hosting at $4/month or pay for a Cloud server at $34/month.
Is it worth going to a cloud server and if so why is it better ?

Thanks for your feedback.

I don't see how a web hosting service for $4/month would work. I doubt they would let you install the AwareIM application on a shared web hosting service. You will probably only have access to the web root folder via FTP and a MySQL database which is the standard when it comes to web hosting. Tomcat will need to run somewhere.

Seems to me that you will need your own VPS and a proper firewall. As well as an off-site backup that you can trust.

I'd like to add some pros of running a VPS:
  • Easy scalability if you need to extend the hard drive, add more RAM, or vCPUs.
  • Possibility to move the Virtual Machine file to a completely different host with ease.
  • Possibility to get a backup of the whole Virtual Machine file, much easier and safer to restore data this way, rather than running a Full Metal Restore if you installed AwareIM directly on the hardware.
  • The Virtual Machine file can be exported and mounted in your file system, and browsed via Explorer.

Basically..... 2 X Speed of AWS at 1/2 the Price....

And the amazing kicker..... backup your ENTIRE server in about...... 1 second!

Have been using now for 15 Servers for about 7 years and has been a very good experience.
Cheers,
Mark

except for the "delay" issue with emails, but nice of you to put your promo code in there so you make $50 !

and those bastards charge $10/core for Windows license.
Other services charge a lot less for this aspect.
