We had the same problem. Note that the new library has introduced changes in the CSS which overwrite your CSS so you will need to either use !important or review your approach entirely.

Support has made a plugin for me that uses gravatar and works great. I use it in our email section to fill in icons with faces based on user's email address and also to fill images of companies based on the same criteria. Ask Vladimir , using it is a breeze.
