Date Validation Question

I have several date fields that are in the format of mm/dd/yyyy

I have users that will type in a date like this 2/15/08 which converts to 02/15/1908 and not 2008

Therefore I have reports showing work done in 1908 (it is like a magic time machine

)

I'm unsure of how to validate the field or to ensure they cannot type in a wrong format? It seems to me that if I pick the format of mm/dd/yyyy it should not let them type in short versions of that format?

Any help would be awesome!
