Developer Licence - Concurrent Development

Post by RentProperty »

Hi Guys, So we have a 10 user Developer Licence and we are currently 3 Developers.

We just landed a big project and will have to somehow all three be working on it at the same time. Is it possible to have three people working on different parts of the same BSV simultaneously and if yes... How would this work?

Will you just install the configurator on 3 PC's and point them all to the same database? Will the BSV then be updated
dynamically as the different users's make changes? What happens if one person put's it in test mode?

Any advise on how to approach this will be appreciated.

Kindest Regards

I don't think you can do it, if the team can come up with a way that would be great.

Previously i had three additional resources working with me and the only way at the time was to extract from each version the bits we were working on and then recombine it at a later phase.

So if its possible, it would be AWESOME!

I agree, concurrent development is a pipedream, but having said that, one AIM developer is equivalent to at least a 5 or 10 man team .

I think the following project team makes sense:
1. Master Configurator/Architect of the system, Business Analyst -creates the design/layout , objects rules and processes
2. Configurator 2 - responsible for all Form layout / Menus / Perspectives
3. Configurator 3 - Reports, Charts, Help Files and built in system description for technical manual generation.

ACDC is right...if you don't split the responsibilities you will end-up with a mess. You should not have 3 brains trying to manage one body.

+1 !!

If you can at least integrate AwareIM into 3rd party version control system will be awesome. Or a built-in one is more preferrable.
Thanks in advance!

Any update on this? Is there really no good way to do concurrent development?

If my memory serves me right, I read in a post [somewhere] that "Concurrent development" is not supported in AwareIM.

Concurrent development is more difficult in Aware IM than using traditional development practises, but it's not impossible. AC/DC is right - share responsibilities properly and then an architect can merge changes done by other developers into the MASTER version. In some cases by just doing simple copy and paste from one version into another one (for example, copy and paste new forms, queries, documents etc).

Note also that Aware IM supports export to XML, so you can easily compare two BSV's in any text editor

So long as each developer works on a locked set of Business Objects - including rules then I so no reason why each developer cannot work away totally independently and then just
cut and paste queries, processes, reports or notifications into the Master BS.

I cut and paste parts of apps all the time.

Meant to say.....

This is especially advantageous when you are using contract developers in far away Countries who you hardly know or who you have never
actually met.....

I am sure nobody would even dream of doing such a thing, but, it avoids your whole app finishing up in the wrong hands.... ;-)

Well, if I had a development house here, I wouldn't make the full bsv available to any developer in the office.
The far away principle is as close as the desk next door.... ;-)
